Tennessee Onions Recipe

- 2 ½ pounds about 3 big ones sweet onions, in ¼-inch to ½-inch slices
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 4 ounces 1 cup shredded gouda cheese
- 4 ounces 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
- ½ dry mustard
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- ¼ cup chopped salted butter
- Nonstick cooking spray as needed
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F and spritz cooking spray over a 13×9-inch baking sheet.
- Toss the onion slices in a bowl with parsley, thyme, oregano, garlic salt, cayenne pepper, and mustard.
- Transfer into the greased baking dish and dot the butter on top.
- Sprinkle the cheese on top.
- Now cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for about 40 minutes or until the onions are soft.
- Discard the foil and bake for half an hour more or until golden brown on top.

You’re unlikely to have leftovers but, if you do, keep them refrigerated in an airtight container and eat within 3 days. You can microwave them or reheat them on the stove.

Feel free to use any type of cheese you want here. Also, you can use other onions. Walla walla are good if you can’t find Vidalia. You can even use regular yellow onions (perhaps add a pinch of white sugar to the dish, in this case).
